More "Growing Up (mostly) Italian"…The Feast

The Feast

Every year my grandmother would work the Feast of Mount Carmel in Rosebank. I loved most when she worked the zeppole stand and I would get free treats, but I wasn't too crazy about the times she worked the game booths. Year after year it was the same scenario: I would put my ticket down on a number, she would spin the wheel, and then she’d stop it on my number. It was mortifying. I wanted to run in fear of getting beat up by the other kids playing the game.

And of course my prize was always the biggest one on the top shelf.
